Can it happen that in the year of Kafka’s celebration, three cockroaches undergo a reverse “metamorphosis”? Can it happen that they leave their lair and wander around the city observing their surroundings? Can it happen that these little bugs express themselves by borrowing lyrics from the world’s most famous British band? Can it happen that upon encountering them, one falls in love because in our tormented civilization “love is all you need”? Yes, it can happen! In fact, it already has! “Street Beatles” tackles the paradox of the absurd with sagacious irony, as a tribute to humorous literature and British music. Inspired by Ian McEwan’s famous book “The Cockroach,” which reverses Kafka’s prose, we want to think once again that an upside-down world is possible, where even the most despised insects by humans become significant, as if the thoughts of the least important take priority for once. The Beatles sang “all you need is love,” which became a pacifist anthem. The three cockroaches, just before being stepped on, hum the chorus “love, love, love,” reminding us that the only possible salvation is a culture of peace. This show, born from an idea by Rita Pelusio, is an artistic response to a historical moment that is sinking day by day into an inhumane condition.
