Mercantia, the largest Italian festival of the Fourth Theatre

Mercantia features dance performances, music, juggling, balancing acts, circus shows, installations, and crafts. Mercantia is wonder, magic, and imagination. All of this takes place in a unique setting: in the streets and squares, gardens, and crypts of the medieval village of Certaldo.

A history spanning over thirty years

Mercantia was founded in 1988 under the artistic direction of Alessandro Gigli. In its first year, the event hosted 10 theatre companies, but that was just the beginning. Since then, the festival has grown to involve hundreds of artists from all over Italy and abroad, becoming a reference point in the international street theatre scene.
